How to Build a Great Email Marketing List

Email marketing is one of the most effective forms of business communication. You can reach current and potential customers where they already are – in their email. Instead of having to bring people to your website or social media platforms, you can meet them in their environment. According to studies, more than 90% of people check their email daily. Successful email marketing services can get more people to your website which can result in more conversions. Building a quality email marketing list is the first step in a successful campaign.

The relationship you share with those on your email list is incredibly important. Email subscribers that have given you permission to email them know your brand and trust you, which means they can be more easily converted. Maintaining your relationship with subscribers and taking care to build a responsive list is key. A list of people who are or could be interested in your products and services is invaluable to your business.

Quality Over Quantity

Many people think the more addresses they send to the better. However, that’s not exactly true. You could have a list of 10,000 email addresses, but if most of those people aren’t engaged with your brand or haven’t given you permission to email them, it could backfire. In the beginning, cultivating a quality list truly outweighs the size of it. Once you’ve taken time to nurture and vet your list, you can then focus on growing it. Obviously, the larger your list, the more impact you can have, but only if that list is made up of quality subscribers or prospects.

Protect Worthwhile Content

Building a quality list comes through consistently engaging with people who are interested in your brand, products, or services. One way to net more subscribers and interested customers is by offering them something they want, as long as they sign up for your email list. Gating valuable content is a great way to build a quality email marketing list. As an example, say you have an incredibly useful blog post that lives on your site with no protection, but you have a specific how-to guide related to that blog post in the works. Sending out an email blast to prospective email list subscribers highlighting this post and teasing the valuable how-to guide is an opportunity for you to gain more subscribers. Simply require an email sign-up to gain access to the how-to guide and you’ve added a lot of high-quality subscribers to your list.

Make It Easy

As with nearly anything related to user experience – make it easy for people to sign up for your email list! Placing easy-to-find sign-up calls to action (CTAs) on your website is key to building a quality email marketing list. It may seem as though tossing a sign-up bottom at the bottom of your homepage is enough, but usually, it’s not. Of course, you don’t want to beat your customers over the head with CTAs but think about high traffic, visible places to put them. As an example, put a sign-up CTA on the bottom of each blog post. If they’re already there and like what they’ve read, they’re more likely to sign up. Also, ensure you have prominent CTAs on your website’s most visited pages.
